(originally posted on 02 Feb 2008)

In 1999, BBC Scotland made a documentary about Gordon Smith called 'The Psychic Barber'

Gordon Smith is an astoundingly accurate medium. He is renowned for his ability to give exact names of people, places and even streets. His extraordinary skills have attracted the attention of university scientists researching the paranormal and countless numbers of journalists and documentary makers.

He was aware from a very young age that he could see things that others couldn’t. One particular incident at the age of 7 was of seeing a friend of the family who had been buried the week before. Seeing ‘ghosts’ and having ‘visions’ were normal for him but misunderstood by those around him.

When Gordon was in his early 20’s, a friend’s (and co-worker‘s) brother died in a fire and appeared to Gordon one night by his bedside. Gordon later found out that the lad had died that night in a house fire. After this occurrence he went with his friend to a Spiritualist Church to see if she might get a message from her brother. The demonstrating medium that evening told him from the platform that one day he would be doing the very same thing. Five years later Gordon indeed found himself standing on that very platform.
Gordon travelled round to various Spiritualist Churches before finding a Development Circle with Mrs Primrose. Thus began a long period of training before he was asked to fill in one night for a guest medium who had failed to turn up.

Up until recently, Gordon still worked as a barber whilst working as a platform medium and became very much in demand. He was befriended by the late Albert Best (a fellow Glasgow medium, and uncle of footballer, George Best) who predicted that Gordon would work in Japan within 5 years of the prediction - which in fact happened. Gordon has travelled to several different countries including Gibraltar and Australia and he works very often in the USA.

Whilst the early brushes with TV were not exactly the best, as Gordon himself remembers in his first book, he came to the attention of the public as a whole during the Everyman documentary, Talking to the Dead. He has since appeared on the Richard and Judy Show, This Morning, Most Haunted, and The Heaven and Earth Show, as well as writing a column for 'Best' magazine, The Daily Record and the Sunday People.

Gordon now tours doing mediumship workshops and events around the world. He is one of the UK’s leading Spiritualist Teachers, and has written several books.

I wonder what Anne Robinson's beliefs are, has she ever been to a medium/psychic and had any real validation? Maybe we'll get an idea on the programme.

Yes, I'm particularly looking forward to Gordon's performance!

And then ..... NOT LONG, Lar till June !! very happy (Lar-Lar and I are booked up for Gordon's Mediumship Development Workshop in London). I'm so looking forward to that ~ and really excited about meeting Lar also ~ in person. Already feel like she's a dear friend I've known all my life (as with all the lovely friends I've met through the forums).

It's just a one-day workshop, Lynne. Gordon runs these types of workshops all through the year, from "beginners" through to more practised and experienced mediums, a splendid opportunity offering many to share in his own experiences and development. What better teacher to have than one who has proved his genuine mediumship abilities to such an extent. This particular workshop is being run with another brilliant medium, Mary Armour, who I've heard much about but yet to meet her, looking forward to that too.

Isn't he just.. MWAAAA!! Apparently, he really didn't want to do the kilt thing, but the organisers sort of coerced him into wearing it as they felt the American audience would particularly love it and that was his first appearance in America. He was very nervous about appearing there, but of course that all left him once he got out on the stage.

A typical account of a one-day Workshop conducted by Gordon Smith [ from erinpavlina.com ]

May 31st, 2007 by Erin Pavlina

Recently I attended a 6 hour workshop conducted by Gordon Smith, a medium from the U.K. who, by all reports, is one of the most accurate mediums in the world. You can imagine my excitement to get the opportunity to “study” with him without having to fly halfway across the globe. I learned a great deal from him so of course I’m going to share what I learned because I know there are a lot of budding psychics and mediums who read my blog.  Those of you who are not budding psychics and mediums may still find some interesting information in this entry about how mediumship works.

The first hour of the workshop he spent explaining that “you can’t die for the life of you” in his wonderfully rich Scottish accent. He was basically imparting unto the crowd that when you slough off your physical shell your consciousness will continue on in the afterlife. Never fear, he says. He described many of his experiences communicating with the other side.

During the second hour of the workshop he did readings for people in the crowd. It was excitingly wonderful to watch him work. He is described as being a medium who can give names, dates, and places and I witnessed this myself. In one case he told a woman the name of her deceased mother, living sister and brother, and then mentioned a doctor appt she had coming up and he gave the day and time! And he was right about all of it. The woman he was reading for was crying throughout. Having that kind of confirmation that your loved ones are still with you on the other side and able to see what’s going on is immeasurably wonderful!

We broke for lunch and I was hoping that afterwards he would teach us more about his process so I could double check some things I was doing and learn how to connect better with deceased energies. When I first became a medium I figured I would need to go study somewhere or read a manual to get better, but my guides assured me they would guide and help me as I needed it, plus there was no manual that I could find.  Now, there are schools in the U.K. that apparently teach mediumship and psychic skills. Reminds me of Hogwarts. I would love to attend a 4 year university like that! But alas, packing up and moving the family to the U.K. for 4 years doesn’t seem likely. Maybe I could get through the 4 year course in three semesters. I’ve heard that’s possible.

So after lunch he explained how he does his mediumship. Here is what he discussed.

    Development Circles

Someone in the audience asked about development circles and Gordon seems very in favor of them if you can find or create a good one. A development circle contains a group of psychics, mediums, healers, etc. who work together on a regular basis to develop their abilities using the energy and experience of the other group members. Development circles are not social meet ups, don’t contain group discussions, and are not potluck events. You must take your group very seriously. The energy must remain the same. If you are late, you do not come, or you will disrupt the group. Four to eight people seem ideal for a circle. They should be done in the same place in the same way at the same time to the greated extent possible.

One thing Gordon said that was interesting was that when the spirits notice that you are working hard and that you are dedicated to mediumship as a profession, they are more likely to communicate with you since it takes so much of their energy to contact a physical being that to go to someone who was just “messing around” wouldn’t be to their benefit. So if you are serious about your psychic development, try to find a group of people to work with. He mentioned that in his group there is a psychic artist, healer, medium, and others, so you don’t all have to have the same modality. You just want to make sure the dedication level and skill are roughly equal to yours. For more information on development circles, check out Gordon’s book, The Unbelievable Truth, or check out James Van Praagh’s books because he mentions his development circle in one of them (sorry the title escapes my memory at the moment).

Communication is a one way street

One of the more interesting things Gordon discussed was how spirits present to him. He mentioned that he does not control who comes through. You may want to hear from your mom but all you’re getting is your dad. He said the stronger energies usually break through first and then they often bring in the weaker energies. This has nothing to do with how strong or weak they were on earth, it has more to do with their energetic ability to resonate at our frequency.

He also confirmed for me that he does not conduct dialogues between the sitter and their deceased loved ones. He merely receives their stories, images, sounds, feelings, and conveys them to his sitter. This is something I’ve wondered too since that’s what happens when I’m receiving from a dead person, and I always thought this was a deficiency in my ability, but now I know it’s the norm. You can’t ask Aunt Tilly where the will is. As people asked Gordon questions like, “Well is he saying what his name is?” Gordon would respond, “If he did, darlin’, I would have told you.” Sometimes spirits come through with their names, and sometimes they don’t. The job of the deceased loved one is to send you enough validation so that you know it’s really them communicating to you from the other side.

I’ve learned over this last year that mediumship is a wonderful tool for providing validation that life continues on the other side, but if it’s information about your own life ye be after, you’ll be wanting to consult a psychic. All mediums are psychics but not all psychics are mediums. Do not consult a medium if you want to know if you should take the job in Los Angeles. Do consult a medium if it’s very important for you to know that your loved ones are alive and well on the other side.

    Demonstration

Gordon wanted us all to try our hand at picking up information psychically so he paired us off with strangers and we went to work. My partner sat while I stood behind her and I put my hands on her shoulders. I don’t think I even saw this woman’s face. He first asked us to pick up information about the person’s nature. Just a few words that came to mind. What I picked up from my partner was the word “helpful” and then I got a flood of information where I saw her basically volunteering to be on every committee her church had to offer. I then saw that people would come to her for advice when they were down and she never offered them a shoulder to cry on; rather she would lift them up by their bootstraps, dust them off, and send them back into the world stronger. Next Gordon had us lift our hands off their shoulders and move them around their auras, seeing if we could pick up any health related problems in their body. I felt heat in the area of her chest and as my hands were hovering over her heart and lungs my own chest area started to feel heavy and sick. Not pleasant so I moved on quickly. Next we were told to move further out in the auric field and communicate with any deceased energies we found there. I did not pick up on any, however, I was in contact with her spirit guides who told me something interesting. They said, “The son is now the father.” That was their direct quote, and they conveyed to me that this “son” was maturing and being more responsible.

So afterwards we were to tell our partner what we saw. I told her everything I described above and she confirmed that everything I picked up was accurate. She even looked chagrined and admitted that she is actually on every committee in her church and knows she volunteers more than necessary. She also told me her step son (she does not have a biological son) just became a father 2 weeks ago and it has really matured him, for which she is very grateful. And she told me that she was getting over pnuemonia. She said, “Wow, you’re amazing. You should be a professional.” And I said, “Actually I am.” Smile

We switched places and she read me. The information she picked up on me was very vague and I couldn’t really relate it to anything going on in my life. Oh well.

I enjoyed the demonstration and there were many other people in the room who had amazing experiences as well.

    How It Works

Gordon did a visual demonstration of how mediumship really looks by having “dead people” volunteers come on stage and a “medium” while he played the guide in the middle. He showed how his guide goes to the dead people and gets information and then whispers it in his ear. He then conveys what he’s gotten to his sitter. I asked him if he uses just his own guide to speak to the dead people or if he connects with his sitters’ guides as well. He confirmed that he speaks to both his own guide and the guides of the person he is reading for, which is something I do as well. It was basically a “behind the scenes” demonstration of what he is perceiving during a reading.

    Naming the Guide

Someone in the audience asked what Gordon’s guide’s name was. Gordon paused for a long time before answering. He seemed uncomfortable with the question. Finally he said, “Well first you have to understand that I named my own guide. Names are not important to them so I gave him the name I wanted to call him.” I could tell that people in the audience thought this was odd; everyone gets really hung up on names, but do you really think energy in the either is going around with names? No, that’s a human convention. His answer fascinated me since I named my guide too. When I first met my guide in the White Room and asked him his name, he waved me off like it was totally irrelevant. Then he said, “You pick a name for me.” I call him Bob because he looks like a Bob to me. He has accepted this and we have a lovely relationship. I have other guides, but Bob is specifically there to help me connect with guides and spirits in the either, like a gatekeeper of sorts. By the way, Gordon tells us there are guides and gatekeepers to keep us out of the ether instead of keeping the ether energies in. Feel scummy? Yeah, me too.

    Opening and Closing Rituals

Someone asked what Gordon does to open himself up to energies and to close down at the end of a session. He conveyed that he does not do anything elaborate like some mediums do. When he wants to connect, he opens himself up, gets out of his own way, becomes a clear channel, and sends his guide, Chi, to work. When he is done he thanks all parties involved and goes on about his day. He mentioned that spirits do not follow him around and only on very rare occasions is a spirit strong enough to get through to him when he is not officially working. This is true for me as well. Like a radio, you can turn it off when you’re not wanting to tune in. That’s the healthy thing to do. People who leave themselves open all the time tend to get drained or put in padded rooms.  One thing I will do, however, is an opening ritual for myself which helps me set my ego aside so I can be a clear channel. It takes just 2 minutes and I do it before every reading.

    Gordon Rocks

I very much enjoyed Gordon’s workshop. At the end he asked if anyone from the audience wanted to come up to the stage and give a reading to someone in the audience. I raised my hand but he selected another guy whom he’d met during the break who expressed an interest earlier. Shucks! This guy gave a great and very accurate reading to a gentleman in the audience, but Gordon was helping to guide him a little and that was interesting to watch. Gordon had a wonderful sense of humor, though he is a very down to earth guy. He owns a barbershop and does hair when he’s not channeling the dead. If you ever get a chance to attend one of his workshops or see him work, take it. He’s marvelous!

Yes, we finally met! Had a great natter afterwards over hot chocolate, mocha, cheesecake and chicken pie! You can imagine at least some of the topics covered in our conversation (Spiritlinker's got such a magical soft, soothing voice), and also discussing the medium Henry Cummings who was demonstrating - given top marks by both of us (and that's just for his looks alone!) We'll both be putting our reviews up on the demonstration on spiritlove forum.

Really great to meet you Spiritlinker, and looking forward to our next meeting.
Good luck in your workshop on Saturday. I know you'll have a great day there (almost (but not quite!) as enjoyable as the day me and lar-lar'll be having! xx

Gordon Smith Empty Gordon's thought for the month

    Post by Candlelight.kk Tue 2 May 2017 - 20:18

    Children in Grief

I was so sad to hear of the little 8-year-old boy who took his own life following the death of his mother and grandfather. I don't know any of the exact details of his experiences, but clearly he was in great distress.  In many cases that I encounter, -  children deal with bereavement well and continue chatting away to their relative in the spirit world, but obviously this little boy felt utterly bereft and took steps to try and join his relatives on the other side.

As a society we don't have a natural way of helping children encounter death. The old traditional view was to protect them from it, not allowing them to attend the funeral and not discussing it around them as it might be too disturbing for them, but I think that this stems from our adult fear of passing, rather than being a reflection of children's own responses. We have probably all read remarkable stories of children with terminal illnesses whose attitude to their own death inspires everyone they meet. I believe children do have this innate wisdom and know in the core of their being in which Spirit is indestructible, but are probably confused by the fear and pain that they see in adults.

In recent times I have been giving thought to ways that children can be helped to understand that death and life are natural companions and that death doesn't need to be feared.  I'm being urged to write a book for children about the spirit world and I hope that this might be just one of many resources that become available to help children cope with loss.  I would love to hear your ideas for helping children on the forum.

I read this on the pb forum. It's just too awful for words. How could a child of that age find the means to do such a thing, I wonder.

Well, myself and Spirtlinker have met quite a few times since. In fact I've just left her now this evening. Gordon was the medium at the spiritualist church where I go, taking part in their Animal Charity weekend. He did a demonstration there last night - Spiritlinker's first time to see him demonstrate - and she got a wonderful message from him. I'm sure she will tell you all about it herself. He was amazing, as usual, firing out the messages in all directions, never stopping for breath. We had to pay £6 on the door, but all the proceeds went to an Animal Charity.
And he was there again today doing his bit - and of course so were we! Another chance to see this great medium - and for free! Well, you just can't get enough of a good thing. The theme was of course centred around animals and Gordon recounted lots of interesting stories to us of occasions where our beloved pets in spirit have given proof of their continued existence.

Gordon Smith Empty Gordon Smith on TV ~ Psychic Therapy

    Post by Candlelight.kk Tue 2 May 2017 - 20:35

    17 Sep 2008

    From Gordon Smith's Newsletter :-

    Psychic Therapy

We've just finished filming the last Biography Channel episode for the series that starts airing this Autumn on Tuesday October 9th, 8pm. There are six one hour episodes. The idea of the series is that I go in to the homes of 6 celebrities: Claire Sweeney, Pete Burns, Sam Fox, Mica Paris, Darren Day and Phil Tufnell, and talk to them about their lives and how Spirit brings healing to them in a variety of different ways. There are some really moving experiences in the series and some very unexpected things happen.

It is brave of these public figures to allow myself and the cameras to enter so closely into their lives. I know that the filming has had a positive impact on their lives, and not in any way reduced or cruelly exposed them. I was really impressed with the sensitivity that the production team maintained throughout the filming. I hope that you will get chance to view it and find it inspiring.

    Gordon Smith June Newsletter

As I look at all the political turmoil and the financial uncertainty, I feel great sympathy for all the people who are enduring suffering – but I also have such a strong sense that everything is happening exactly as it needs to. Anything that has been in the dark needs to come into the light, and I think that this is what is happening in the world right now. Aspects of society’s systems and structures that have stopped working or become corrupt are being exposed to the light of day and we are becoming able to see them clearly for the first time in many years. This is not about individuals – this is all about the systems in which they function. I suspect that the majority of politicians enter that profession with a true desire to serve the community, yet find themselves in a system in which lying to someone is the norm. It must be really hard for a person embarking on a political career in recent years to have been able to maintain their integrity, particularly if they found themselves in government!

I escaped all the politics in the media at the weekend and headed up to Scotland to lead a workshop. It was great to be teaching at home in Glasgow again. Being there made it possible for me to visit Samye Ling, the beautiful monastery that is the absolute antidote to all the anxiety and chaos surrounding us right now. It was a really auspicious day to be there, as a long retreat had just finished and many of the lamas were gathered together. It allowed me to connect to that deep sense of peace that understands that everything is always changing and being able to accept this process peacefully enables us to live a happier and more content life. The monks at Samye Ling follow a Tibetan tradition known as the Kagyu lineage, of which the head is a wonderful young man called the Karmapa (see the details of his book below). Many people are looking to this amazing young man to be an influential spiritual leader for our troubled times and I think he is part of the new energy of change that we are seeing emerging in our world right now. To me there are many signs of the new hope that is emerging, and if the USA can elect Barack Obama as their president, we know that hope is possible even in politics!

Gordon Smith Empty Why do bad things happen? ~ Gordon Smith

    Post by Candlelight.kk Tue 2 May 2017 - 20:46

    23 Nov 2009

Gordon Smith's latest book - out now.

    Gordon Smith 5193N%2BG3%2BbL._SX308_BO1,204,203,200_

    Why Do Bad Things Happen

The child who dies of a terminal illness, the mother of a young family killed by a drunk driver, the young boy who takes his own life because he is bullied at school, the children massacred when a crazed person takes a gun into their school. So many lives seem to end tragically – world renowned medium Gordon Smith looks at why.

In his work as a medium Gordon is constantly asked why a person had to die. Were they too good for this world? Did they go before their time? Why would a benevolent God let them suffer? Are they still suffering after death? For Gordon his work with the Spirit world is dedicated to healing the living. This book will answer many of the questions that torment the living when death steals away someone they love. This inspirational, heart-felt book will give people a deeper understanding of the relationship between life and death and the journey we all take when we leave this life.

    It's not long out.

Here is an extract from 'Why Do Bad Things Happen?'

    What is destiny?

You can't be in my line of work without coming across the big philosophical questions of life. You might think that the real biggie is whether there is life after death, but for any medium or any bereaved person who's known the comfort of a message from a loved one on the other side, it's simple - of course there is, we just have to be open enough to experience the connection we still have with those in spirit, be they Grandma or the dog. Contact with the spirit world is part of our everyday life, whether it comes through a message from a medium at a demonstration with hundreds of people present or just through thinking of someone you've lost and feeling their presence for a split second when you're doing the washing up or stuck in a traffic jam.

But what about those bigger questions of destiny, fate and karma? We tend to divide everything up into 'good' and 'bad' and think of our lives as an accumulation of deeds which go on some sort of karmic balance sheet. It's even in our everyday language, as we say. 'You reap what you sow.' So, do enough of the good and it'll cancel out the bad. Too much high living and fun and you'll be in for a smack down. Do really well and you'll be rewarded with a nice car and a new girlfriend.

Real life doesn't dish out the gifts and the blows like that, though; it seems much more confusing and contradictory. People want to know why they've lost a spouse in an accident when they've lived good lives and always worked for charity, or why their neighbour won the lottery, even though she's never known how to handle money and is up to her eyeballs in debt. It seems as though there's no logic behind it, and it's tempting to think of a spiteful and capricious force hurling down thunderbolts for a laugh. Or to say fate is cruel and karma is a bitch. Yet all the time we're begging Lady Luck to single us out so we can have our time in the clover. Or claiming responsibility: 'Be careful of what you wish for,' or that it's personal fate: 'What's for you won't go past you' - which just about covers everything!

I've known men and women torture themselves with regret over something long since done and dusted because they are convinced that what they did was linked to a greater tragedy. In a way they're seeking control over the suffering that life dishes out. If someone they loved died abruptly in an accident or through violence, they want to know if it could have been avoided and then spiral into 'what ifs'. It also seems to be instinctive for people to want to blame themselves for the suffering that a child has gone through in order to take some of that burden onto themselves.

We like to take responsibility for some things that are nothing to do with us and yet sometimes we try to pretend that things we really are responsible for just came out of nowhere. In both cases we make life much harder both for ourselves and for others. And when you consider that this 'fate' or 'karma' covers everything from the drive to work to world wars and global warming, how do you even begin to get a handle on that? You'd go mad if you tried to think through the consequences of every last thing you did, imagining some terrible punishment forever waiting to drop on your head.

In fact we can spend a lifetime struggling to understand how to negotiate this plane of existence and come out the other side with a lighter mind and greater wisdom. There are lots of mental traps that we can fall into or false roads we can take which leave us at a spiritual dead end.

So how can we make it easier on ourselves? Is there any way we can really tell what is our fate and what, if anything, we can do to change it?
