Poems of Reflection

Post by Feather on Fri 26 May 2017, 23:27

SPELLBOUND.

SHAGGY SHETLANDS CLEAVE TOGETHER,
THICK, CARPET RUMPS HELD TO THE WIND,
STURDY BEASTS WITH PATIENT EYES
OF CHOCOLATE BROWN.
A HAZY, PASTEL RAINBOW ARCS
ACROSS THE VISION, MERGING INTO
SLATEY CLOUDS OF SILENT MENACE
WHICH RULE THE SKY.
NOW SLEET IS SLICING DOWN TO EARTH;
IT STRIKES THE GLASS WITH FORCE AND STARTLES
BUT MELTS ONCE MORE IN SUNSHINE,
TEPID, PALE.FOUR WHEELS BUMP AND GRIND
ACROSS ALARMING CAUSEWAY OF HEWN STONE,
ROCKY, ISOLATED PATHWAY
TO MEDITATION.
CHOPPY, FROTH-TOPPED, DANCING WAVES
JIG AND SWIRL TO MUSIC MUTE;
THEY FUSE AND PART, ARE EVER FAITHFUL
TO NATURE’S TUNE.
IN MIDDLE DISTANCE, THERE APPEARS
A LEAFY COPSE OF EVERGREENS,
A HAVEN FOR THE FEATHERED HARBINGERS
OF PROMISED SPRING.
REMOTE HORIZON OF YOUTHFUL DAYS-
CAREFREE DAYS OF HOPE AND LOVE-
IS BROKEN BY A SHEER CLIFF FACE,
MAJESTIC, HIGH.
A SOLITARY GULL DRIFTS BY,
GREY AND WHITE LIKE SEA BENEATH;
IT FLOATS, IT RISES, FALLS AT WILL,
SURVIVES ALONE.
IT HOLDS A SPECIAL FASCINATION,
SYMBOL OF POWER TO OVERCOME
THE VAGRANT WIND, THE STORMY SEA,
FOCUSED, ALOOF.
THE WATCHER SOON FEELS HESITATION
TO ENCROACH ON NATURE MORE,
BUT NO SUCH RETICENCE OBSTRUCTS
THE NEXT INTRUDER.
THE DRONING OF A HELICOPTER
BURSTS UPON THE ANCIENT SCENE,
PERSISTENT IN ITS WHIRLING FLIGHTS
ACROSS THE SKY.
THEN STRANGERS IN A RED-BOX CAR
CREEP ALONG THE RUGGED ROAD,
AND, AS THEY PASS, THEY SMILE AND WAVE
BUT DO NOT STAY.
CROFTS LIE DOTTED ROUND ABOUT,
COSY FAMILIES LODGED WITHIN;
SHEEP AND CATTLE CROP THE GRASS,
LUSCIOUS AND GREEN.
THEY EAT THEIR FILL, ARE UNAWARE;
HAPPILY, THEY CANNOT KNOW
THAT THEY ARE NURTURED FOR THEIR GIFTS
OF FLESH OR FLEECE.
AND SO THE SPELL IS BROKEN NOW;
THE MAGIC OF THE HOUR HAS PASSED,
THE SCENE DISSOLVES, THE WATCHER LEAVES
FOR MAN-MADE HOME.
NECESSITY, CONDITIONING
DRIVE THE WHEELS INLAND AGAIN,
BUT MEMORY HOLDS, FAST AND SURE, THE TIME
SPENT BY THE BAY.

PETAL POWER

Post by Feather on Sat 27 May 2017, 00:11

PETAL POWER.

THE TERRACOTTA POT STANDS STRONG,
UNYIELDING TO THE FRACTIOUS GALE,
PROVIDING SHELTER, HOLDING FAST
AGAINST THE SNOW, AGAINST THE HAIL,
STRENGTHENING HOPE WITHIN THE HEART
THAT PROMISES IT HOLDS WITHIN
WILL BE FULFILLED AT WINTER’S END
WHEN JOY AND WARMTH AND LIFE BEGIN.
THO’, EVEN NOW, BEYOND THE RIM,
THE BROODING GHOST OF JACK FROST LINGERS,
SILENT, GLISTENING, ICY-COLD,
MISTING THE BREATH, BURNING THE FINGERS,
YET SUDDENLY, AND THRUSTING HIGH,
MIRACULOUS IT IS TO SEE
ONE GOLDEN, ROSE-TIPPED, BLUSHING BUD
EMBRACING LIGHT, ASCENDING FREE.
IN ITS SEARCH FOR SKY AND SUN,
‘TIS STRANGE THAT SUCH A TENDER FLOWER
SHOULD HOLD, WITHIN ITS TINY STEM,
THIS ENERGY, THIS AWESOME POWER.
AND YET MORE WONDER IT CONCEALS
IN ALL ITS GOLDEN, FIREY HUES
FOR, IN ITS WARMTH, ITS TENDERNESS,
IT CONJURES UP A THOUGHT OF YOU,
FOR SEEDS WERE SOWN AGAIN THAT DAY,
THAT AUTUMN DAY OF THREATENING RAIN,
AS SEEDS OF FRIENDSHIP LONG AGO
WHICH BLOSSOMED- AND, TODAY, REMAIN.

FOR INGA, WITH LOVE AND GRATITUDE. 19TH FEB. 2OO6.

SHIFTING SHADOWS.

Post by Feather on Sat 27 May 2017, 00:12

Feb 13, 2008

O, SPRING OF LATE BLOSSOMS AND PREMATURE DEATH,
WHAT CONTRASTS YOU HOLD FOR ME, LEFT HERE ON EARTH!
YOUR BLOOMS THEY WERE TARDY, THEIR EMERGEANCE SO SLOW;
HIS PASSING WAS SUDDEN, UNPREDICTED BELOW
WHERE LIFE-CHANGING TRAGEDY ON THAT BLEAK ROAD
AFFORDED ME SUCH AN UNBEARABLE LOAD
OF BLUNT UNACCEPTANCE, OF BLANK DISBELIEF,
AS YET, NO SOFT SOLACE, NO SOOTHING RELIEF.
A LIFE FULL OF LOVE, FULL OF KINDNESS AND HOPE
HAS ENDED- AND, HURTING, I JUST BLINDLY GROPE
MY WAY THROUGH THE MADNESS THAT HE LEFT BEHIND.
URGENT THE SEARCH; BEWILDERED THE MIND;
PERSISTENT THE LONGING FOR WHAT I HAVE LOST;
UNENDING THE YEARNING FOR WHAT I MISS MOST-
A COMFORTING WORD FROM THE VOICE THAT’S NO MORE.
O, WHY CAN’T I LISTEN AT THAT FINAL DOOR
BEYOND WHICH HE’S PASSED TO A FARAWAY PLACE?
O, WHY CAN’T I SEE HIS DEAR, HANDSOME FACE?
WHERE THE EYES’ TWINKLE? WHERE THE BRIGHT SMILE?
WHY CAN’T HE TELL ME WE’LL MEET IN A WHILE?
MY HEAVIEST BURDEN BY FAR IS THE LOSS
OF THE SOUL-MATE THAT WAS, WHO GAVE LIFE ITS GLOSS,
WHO, DAILY AND CONSTANTLY, IN EVERY WAY,
MADE LIFE WORTH LIVING - TILL THAT DAY IN MAY.

Re: Poems of Reflection

Post by Stardust on Sat 27 May 2017, 00:14

These are so lovely and the last one holds such sadness, Feather.

Sometimes happiness will sing out and little dancing words will float across the page from the pen which seems to write of its own accord, forming phrases that are like pretty bouquets of sweetly perfumed and multi-coloured flowers.

Other times our pain bursts forth from us in furious words that will not be held back, that group themselves together like mini thunderstorms and march across the page like fierce armies of soldiers.

Happy or sad, the words assail our senses and echo through our heart and soul.

A gentle whisper like the breeze sighing, so easy to miss, listen carefully...

MIST AND LILIES

Post by Feather on Sat 27 May 2017, 00:20

13 Feb, 2008

MIST IS GATHERING IN THE GRAND SCHEME.
STONES, GREY BENEATH MY FEET,
BETRAY MY STEP, HEAVY AS MY HEART,
TOO HEAVY WHEN THE SILENCE OF THE DEAD
IS RECKONED.
CHARCOAL SKY DESCENDS ON SACRED STONE,
AND, AS I NEAR THE PORTAL,
FACES, GREY AS MINE, REFLECT MY PAIN.

SIDE BY SIDE THE MOURNERS SIT
ROW ON SOMBRE ROW,
FROM WHERE I HIDE MY EYES,
TO WHERE THE MUSIC SWELLS,
INTRUDING ON MY MEDITATION.
PAST AND PRESENT MERGE BENEATH
MY LOWERED LIDS. A FACE APPEARS,
A FACE I KNEW THAT HAD THE P0WER
TO CRYSTALISE A DIAMOND MOMENT
AND DRAW IT, SPARKLING, FROM
FROM THE DROSS OF TIME.

A PAIR OF DOVE-GREY EYES CONVEY TO ME
A TRUTH THAT I MUST LEARN.
LOUDER THAN THE DISTANT HYMN
THE MESSAGE THAT THEY BRING,
MORE PENETRATING THAN THE PRAYER
I HEAR AFAR, PERFORMED IN
PIOUS PLATITUDES.
DRAW BACK, MY FRIEND, FROM THAT DARK CAVE
WHERE GRIEF AND MELANCHOLY NURTURE
LAMPLIGHT DAYS.
IN MISTY MOOD YOU LINGER, LOST AND LONE,
AND PETALS FORM BEFORE YOUR EYES,
YET LEAVE THE FLOWER UNSEEN.

FOR WE HAD DAYS TOGETHER, YOU AND I,
DISTILLED DROPS OF DAYS
WHEN KINDRED SPIRITS TALKED,
WHEN SOUL-MATES LAUGHED AS ONE
AND PONDERED ON THE PLAITED PATHWAYS
THAT WE TROD.

BUT NOW THE WAY DIVIDES AS IN A MAZE;
OUR VISION IS OBSCURED, AND WE,
LIKE BATS AT DAWN ON HOMEWARD WING,
DO BLINDLY REACH OUT FOR
OUR FUTURE DAYS.
BUT- KNOW THAT NOTHING BREAKS
OR IS FOREVER LOST.
ALL SHALL BE WHOLE AGAIN.

THE APRIL SUNLIGHT STARTLES ME
AS GREY GIVES WAY TO BLUE.
A PLAYFUL BREEZE TORMENTS
THE LILY STEMS AND BENDS THEM
TO ITS WILL.
BUT, AS I PASS, THEY RAISE THEIR HEADS
AND WINK THEIR EYES AT ME.
SORROW MELTS; I PLUMB THE ICEBERG’S
DEPTH; I VISUALISE THE FAR SIDE OF THE MOON,.
I TOUCH AGAIN THE ESSENCE OF MY FRIEND.

THE FUNERAL OF KATHY MULRAINE.

SILENT HEART.

Post by Feather on Sat 27 May 2017, 00:26

13 Feb, 2008

QUIET MAN-
STOIC, UNCOMPLAINING, STRAINING
TO SURVIVE.
LONG AGO-
REASSURING, E’ER ENDURING,
SAFE AND WARM.
STEADFAST, TRUE-
MODEST, UNASSUMING, ALL-CONSUMING
ETERNAL CHAIN.
NECTAR TEMPTS,
POISON, REASON-SPURNING, BURNING
HOSTILE BREW.
INSIDIOUS BLIGHT-
SLOWLY INFILTRATING, DEVASTATING
CHANGING ALL.
MANY YEARS-
TRAGIC, SOUL-DESTROYING, CRYING,
FROWNS AND TEARS.
ALL FORGIVEN-
MEMORIES, CHILLING, LIFE-FULFILLING,
YET REMAIN.
LOVE ENDURES-
TIMELESS, OVERWHELMING, QUELLING
BITTER THOUGHTS.
TWO BLUE EYES-
MISTY, DIMMING; OTHERS BRIMMING
SALTY TEARS.
EMPTY CHAIR-
SILENCE, NOW OPPRESSING, TESTING
SANITY.
IMAGES-
TORMENT, DEATH-DEFYING, UNDYING,
RAZOR- SHARP
STATIC TIME-
CRUSHES, EVER-PRESSING, DISTRESSING
AS THE TOMB.
BUT, LIGHT OF LIFE-
HE STAYS, PENETRATING, WAITING
FOR NEW DAYS.

Hi, Stardust. I suppose the picture should have been of lilies after that poem but I
couldn't resist the vibrancy of these ones.xxx.

CLIMATE OF LOVE.

Post by Feather on Sat 27 May 2017, 00:31

13 Feb, 2008

YEAR ON YEAR, THE SEASONS PASS,
VARIED, YET NOT CHANGING,
LIKE HOPEFUL LOVERS IN THE SPRING,
ACTING, STRUTTING, STAGING!
SILLY BIRDS! THEY CHANT AND SING,
WITH NO THOUGHT FOR THE ‘MORROW,
AND WE, LIKE THEM, ARE ON THE WINGS
OF LOVE- TO STEAL OR BORROW!
“THE” ONE APPEARS; WE’VE BUT ONE THOUGHT,
BEGUILED BY WINKS AND GLANCES,
WE OBEY WHAT NATURE’S TAUGHT,
WE RECKON UP OUR CHANCES!
THE SUN ENVELOPS US IN WARMTH,
IN FORM OF THE NEW-COMER,
THE SKIES ARE BLUE FOR LOVE IS NEW,
AND SUDDENLY IT’S SUMMER!
THE ROSE, LOVE’S FLOWER, LIFTS UP ITS HEAD,
TO MEET THE SUN’S HOT KISS,
WHILE LOVERS, TOO, ABSORB THE JOY
OF CLOSE, ROMANTIC BLISS!
BUT SUMMER IS A FICKLE TIME;
IT SMILES, IT CHARMS, IT PLEASES,
YET- LITTLE DOES IT GIVE AWAY
IN ITS GENTLE BREEZES!
SOON FADES THE SWEETNESS OF THE DAY
FOR LEAVES, LIKE TEARS, ARE FALLING,
SWIRLING DOWN AS HOPES DECAY,
AND AUTUMN COMES A- CALLING!
LOOK UP TO THE BROODING SKY,
SEE THE MOODY WATERS;
CAN LOVE REALLY BE A LIE?
IT’S UNSURE; IT FALTERS.
WHETHER IT BE NIGHT OR DAY,
MUDDY IS THE VISION,
ALL APPEARS IN SHADES OF GREY.
CONFUSION! INDECISION!
WHERE IS SPRING NOW? WHERE THE LARK?
WHERE IS SUMMER’S AWNING?
CREATURES SCUTTLE IN THE DARK,
O, BLACK WINTER’S DAWNING!
LOVE IS LOST; ITS FLOWER IS SPENT.
BEYOND HORIZON’S LIMIT,
IT’S OUT OF REACH, IT’S OUT OF SIGHT.
O, WHY DO WE BEGIN IT?
AS MOUNTAIN PEAK, TOO HARD TO SCALE,
REMAINS ALOOF, UNBROKEN,
THE CLIMBER, THO, IS LEFT WITH JUST
A PHOTOGRAPH, A TOKEN.
A LESSON HARSH DOES WINTER TEACH
TO ANIMAL AND BIRD,
BUT THEY ADAPT AND ARE RENEWED.
WHY ARE WE SO ABSURD?
IGNORE THE CALLING OF THE DOVE;
SHIELD THE TELL-TALE EYES;
TURN AWAY FROM SPRING AND LOVE.
THEY’RE MASTERS OF DISGUISE!
LEARN THE LESSON OF THE BIRDS;
HEAR UNDER-CURRENTS RUN
THROUGH THE LOVER’S HONEYED WORDS.
TAKE SHELTER FROM THE SUN!
SEE THE MOON?FORGET THE SIGHS.
APPLY A LITTLE REASON.
THE STARS ARE COLD AS OLD LOVE’S EYES,
AND APATHY’S IN SEASON!
BUT FEEL NO PAIN OR BITTERNESS;
FEEL NO SWEETNESS EITHER,
FOR HE WHO CAUSES THE DISTRESS
WILL SURELY HARBOUR NEITHER!
YES, LET PEACE INVADE THE MIND,
BRING SOLACE AND CONTENTMENT.
TAKE HIBERNATION OF A KIND
TO BANISH ALL RESENTMENT.
BUT O, BEWARE OF SPRING’S ADVANCE,
WHEN BUDS BEGIN TO BLOOM.
THINK WELL BEFORE YOU TAKE THAT CHANCE
LEST BRIGHTNESS TURN TO GLOOM!

Written during a very black time in my life when hope had gone.

Gosh, Feather, you're giving a lot away here. That last one says so much.
I think you were suffering from melancolia yesterday, just like me, and it does tend to make us pour out our hearts a little.
How are you today ? My own sad mood has lifted and I feel much brighter. very happy

I wasn't melancholy at all yesterday, Stardust, but the point is I WAS when I wrote the poem.
I had a close friend here for lunch. We were laughing and joking the way we always do when
she visits me. I had a good Wednesday. No-I simply decided to post some of my own poetry
on the forum. I do hope no-one minds.Glad to hear your mood has lifted. Smile

This forum does seem to have become very poetically orientated, Feather.
That's just the feel it has and we are each inspired by it.
Nourishment for the soul, and surely that was Candlelight's intention ?
I hope nobody else minds, personally I love it. very happy

I love it too, Stardust. If anyone thinks there is too much of it, just say so. It's not everyone's cup of tea and we won't
be offended in the slightest, will we, Stardust? Smile

Naturellement. It depends on whether Candlelight is space-limited with this forum ?
If not then there's no harm since people can choose which threads and posts they want to read.
I think myself that the poems and other writings, with pictures now and then, make up a harmonious ensemble.
