Psychic News is the world's best known and longest-running publication about Spiritualism and the spiritual life. It started life as a newspaper in 1932 and in 2011 it was re-branded as a dynamic, full-colour magazine.

If you're interested in mediumship, psychic ability, paranormal investigation, meditation, spirit art, afterlife research and living a holistic life in mind, body and spirit, PN is for you.

I'm a Spiritualist. I have been for just over 30 years. My early years were informed and guided by what I read in Psychic News. The weekly newspaper carried all the news relevant for Spiritualism and for Spiritualists. It once proclaimed it was the Spiritualist newspaper. The cover of the July 24 2010 edition saw 'The independent Voice of Spiritualism 1932 - 2010'. Nowadays it reads 'DEVELOPING YOUR MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT' with no mention of Spiritualism on its front cover.

Wonder what that tells those who know how things used to be?

There's only so much that can be written about Spiritualism on one page.
The front page of October's edition highlights "Mind, Body and Spirit" because October is traditionally the month for the Mind, Body and Spirit festival held at Olympia in London, an annual event which takes place there every year since it's inception in 1977. (I was there on that very first opening date).

There are something like 60 odd pages in the magazine version of Psychic News - with it's fair share of content concerning Spiritualism:

For example, this month's contents includes:
      • Beginner's guide to the Tarot
      • The outstanding gifts of Darren Brittain (watching a most unusual medium at work)
      • What is trance mediumship? (Nic Whitham explains what it should be, but too often isn't ... How to identify good trance mediumship)
      • The Spiritualist who became a Tibetan Buddhist nun (Leslie Price explores the unusual case of Diane Perry)
      • Psychometrising the Fox sisters (Medium Mavis Pittilla on a unique experience)
      • A Wartime letter from a famous writer (Letter from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to his mother, referring to the moral support
he derived from his Spiritualist convictions)

      • Scientists can 'read' our dreams
      • Does dementia prove there is no soul?
      • Telepathy
      • Einstein and the Prophet
      • A sceptic at Stansted
      • The Naked Embrace (The final part of John West's investigations intothe Phantoms of Langenhoe)
      • Understanding your dreams
      • Conversations with history
      • Don't just stand there - do something! (David Hopkins on standing up for your rights)
      • Don't worry, doctor, I'm only dying (This month's feature from the PN archives)
      • News on the return of TV's 'Most Haunted'

All that, together with a monthly round-up of News in the Spiritualist scene, Readers' letters, Editor's column, news of events, details of a Psychic Cruise, and a Competition to win a place for two at Colin Fry's psychic weekend'

I stand corrected and it's fair comment concerning the MBS conference although I don't follow why that's relevant to PN's heading....

I admit I'm out of the loop and mistakenly thought that what I saw on the website reflected the current situation. Looking back to the time when I was last a subscriber, 2012, I had seen that PN had dropped its reference to Spiritualism for much of that year and wrongly assumed that it hadn't been picked up again based on the current edition - I need to check more carefully before reaching general conclusions based on one instance!

From what you've told us about this month's contents Spiritualism is covered to some degree and it was always the case that not every article would be about Spiritualism - that's not changed. Perhaps I'm wrong after all in thinking that Spiritualism is, after all, alive, well and well-represented in PN!

It was only the Home page I was talking about - and was having a problem bringing it up on my comp, but just tried again now and it's fine.
They may have just been doing some moderating or tidying up there or something at that time. Yes, I can access it okay now.

I just received my new PN edition reminder from Magnus and guess what - it's still carrying the same message of 'Developing Your Mind Body and Spirit' as was the October/Olympia edition. I'm still wondering if there's a different thrust to the magazine....

    Hi mac,

Yes, I noticed that in the heading too. I received notification that the online version is available - as my pre-paid (6-month) subscription is still valid. However, I'm having trouble downloading this month's issue; it's telling me it can't be opened with Adobe for some reason or other and do I want to open it with some other programme????? I haven't a clue ... that's the way I have always done in the past. I think the fault must be from my end, i.e. with my computer, as I haven't (so far) seen anyone else complaining about not being able to download.
When my subscription period runs out, I shan't be renewing. Think I would rather just get the paper version as and when it comes out in future - IF I can get it. If not, then so be it.

I'd wondered if it might not have been your computer at all but I don't know enough about them to have sufficient confidence I was correct. Glad it's been sorted.

I agree with your verdict on the print vs. the online version. I much prefer to have a publication in my hands and be able to scan a whole page at a time without the infernal scrolling that a .pdf file needs. I guess I'm just an old fart who's more comfortable with what he knows best! 😁

Even then things would have to change on the spiritual scene (where's this huge change I'm constantly being told about?) before I'd be tempted to dip-in again to PN's view of the psychic/spiritual scene. Maybe I've done all the learning that was intended for me this time around?

Psychic News: A History Empty Re: Psychic News: A History

    Post by mac Wed 3 May 2017 - 11:07

After reading the piece concerning future demonstrations of physical mediumship at AFC I idly checked again the wording under the Psychic News banner only to see that it's still unchanged carrying the message 'DEVELOPING YOUR MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT'. The only mention of 'Spiritualism' on that front cover is in connection with Radio 4. Is this really the PN that once was seen (I think) as the voice of Spiritualism?

It's raison d'etre now appears to lie in the many fields mentioned here: "Psychic News has been the leading publication covering Spiritualism, mediumship, healing and psychic science since it was established in 1932. Now a monthly magazine, Psychic News keeps you up to date on all paranormal subjects, and features the many and varied alternative and complementary therapies now enjoying popular interest around the world with the emergence of New Age thought.

Learn about astrology, healing, meditation, dream interpretation, spirit communication and how to live a spiritual life. Find out how mediumship and psychic abilities really work. Meet the mediums and psychics who make headlines with their accurate readings. Meet the celebrities who use mind, body and spirit methods to help them in their careers and daily lives. You can even put questions to our experts. Psychic News explores every aspect of the paranormal and psychic science, from acupuncture and consciousness to X-ray vision and yoga, and beyond. Essential reading for those eager to explore spiritual realities and other dimensions on their soul’s journey through this lifetime."

Little wonder this Spiritualist isn't minded to take again this once grand publication.

Even the Forum pages of PN now appear to be open only to subscribers. There was never more than a tiny few contributing anyway and now there's one less - me! Other than KK's new year greeting there have been no new postings since December 2 2014.

I totally agree with you, mac. My subscription expires soon and I certainly won't be renewing it.

I think the situation with PN simply reflects the current position with Spiritualism as a whole, so, in a sense, it probably still is "the voice of Spiritualism".

I hadn't thought of things in that way. What a shame that traditional Modern Spiritualism is going down the lavatory pan but how privileged we are that we knew it as it used to be.
