    Moving to Sweden 3 yeas ago inspired me to look into Swedish traditions and I came across this rather haunting singing technique.  It was used mainly for herding livestock and warning folk across the mountains of predators in the area.

    Puts me in mind of the beautiful haunting voice of [Only admins are allowed to see this link].

    In fact, Kulning is very reminiscent of the old traditional Irish folk song and music, portrayed so beautifully by Clannad, the group that Enya originally sang with.  Clannad is the Irish word for 'family', and all the members are from the same family.

    I'm a big fan of Enya and Clannad and there is an Irish Christian band in the same vein called Iona you should look up.

    I'm sorry, I'm not having fun with the mechanics of this site.  There is often something that goes wrong when I post.  In the context of the thread I thought it would be obvious what the PDF is about.  It is somebody's review of how Kulning works.

    Throughout history, long-distance calls have been created at several different locations where there has been a need of making oneself heard over long distances. Examples include e.g. yodeling (Luchsinger, 1942) and whistled languages (Busnel & Classe, 1976), and such long-distance calls have been used both for human–human communication and for human–animal calling.

    Kulning is the most common term (see Rosenberg, 2003:8, for an extensive listing of alternative words) for a specific type of cattle or herding calls used in some parts of Sweden (e.g. Dalarna, Härjedalen and Jämtland) and is used to call cows or goats gracing freely in the mountains when it is time for milking.

    You wouldn't think the browser would make a difference.  I always use Firefox at home and Chrome at the library.
