A walk around the pet shop.
I love the puppies, rats and ferrets best because they get up to all sorts of antics that make us smile.
Watching the multicoloured fish swimming in the aquarium is very calming and therapeutic.
Perhaps best of all is when there's a parrot who talks to you and cocks his head as if interested in your reply (though of course they'd be better off in their natural environment).

I don't know for sure but I wouldn't be surprised if the law had changed.I disagree with sensitive creatures being kept in the cramped conditions that exist in most pet shops.

I believe that a law did come into play some years ago imposing certain restrictions and guidelines which must be adhered to regarding premises where animals are kept on a commercial basis. I think there are legal requirements now in force which monitor the requisite size of the shops and enclosure areas as well as other facilities that are available for the animals (such as someone being on the premises at all times) . I know that some pet shops don't actually keep any animals at all and you will only find things like pet food, baskets, collars and accessories, etc.

The pet shop I visit has big spaces for the puppies (and kittens, etc); their bedding and water are changed frequently. There are usually two or three together so they can jump about and play, and they have toys to tug at and chew. You can see they love the carers who look after them (who often stop to stroke them and play for a minute or two). They don't stay there very long as they are sold quickly.
Years ago, there used to be animals kept in restrictive and not very clean conditions in shops along the river; it was obvious they weren't happy and it was very sad. But, after the media made a fuss and animal protection associations were mobilized, strict new reglementation was brought in.
Pet shops are not ideal of course, I agree with you there Feather, but it's often the only option in a big city, especially if you don't have a car. Now I see why you had to travel on a train to go fetch your puppy.

A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell.

And set about nailing it to a post on the

last nail into the post,he felt a tug on
his overalls. He looked down into the
eyes of a little boy. "Mister," he said,
"I want to buy one of your puppies."
"Well," said the farmer, as he rubbed the
sweat of the back of ! his neck,
"These puppies come from fine parents and
cost a good deal of money."
The boy dropped his head for a moment.
Then reaching deep into his pocket,
he pulled out a handful of change and held
it up to the farmer. "I've got thirty-nine
cents. Is that enough to take a look?"
"Sure," said the farmer, and with that he
let out a whistle. Here, Dolly!" he called.
Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran
Dolly followed by four little balls of fur.
The little boy pressed his face against the
chain link fence. His eyes danced with
delight. As the dogs made their way to the
fence,the little boy noticed something else
stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly another
little ball appeared, this one noticeably
smaller. Down the ramp it slid. Then in a
somewhat awkward manner, the little pup
began hobbling toward the others,doing its
best to catch up.... "I want that one,"
the little boy said, pointing to the runt.
The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and
said, "Son, you don't want that puppy.
He will never be able to run and play with
you like these other dogs would. " With that
the little boy stepped back from the fence,
reached down, and began rolling up one leg
f his trousers. In doing so he revealed a
steel brace running down both sides
of his leg attaching itself to a specially
made shoe. Looking back up at the farmer,
he said, "You see sir, I don't run too well
myself, and he will need someone who
understands. " With tears in his eyes,
the farmer reached down and picked
up the little pup. Holding it carefully
he handed it to the little boy.
"How much?" asked the little boy.
"No charge," answered the farmer,
"There's no charge for love."

Hmmm...
Bought some really delicious liqueur chocolates a couple of weeks ago, to keep for the New Year celebrations.
Unfortunately, I left them somewhere visible and a few evenings ago we thought we'd just have one as a little treat. You've guessed what happened, last night the box was empty.
Guess who now has to go and buy more - have to hide them away and try to forget all about them this time.

Those delightful chocolates are made in Alsace on the German border and I've been keeping a lookout in the shop that usually sells them for the end of year celebrations - not stocked yet, but soon I hope.

In the meantime, got some of those "Mon Chéri" chocolates with a cherry inside... mmm... very happy
