I love violin music, from classical to popular, even the fiddle. The violin is my favourite instrument, to me it is the most expressive.
I recommend these sites (Chloë Hanslip who is so refreshing and Tasmin Little whose recording of Bach's gavotte you can download to your MP3 for free) :
    http://www.chloehanslip.com/home.htm
    http://www.tasminlittle.org.uk/      and the download here:
    http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/music/article3166593.ece
I just bought the CD of Daniel Hope playing Mendelssohn's violin concerto : http://www.danielhope.com/
I also have all the Bond CDs. Their music is happy and you cannot sit still but have to jump up and dance. http://www.bondmusic.net/

For sure, Stardust, how empty our lives would be without music and song.
In Ireland where I come from you will not find one home where at least one member if not all can play some kind of musical instrument and singing is such an important part of our lives. Our very history is kept alive and recorded through song.
Do you play any instrument yourself?
I can play the piano and the accordian, although just play "by ear". We always had a piano in our house, but unfortunately haven't got one now, but I still have my accordian, a Christmas present from my mum when I was 14. I play when I'm sad to uplift my mood, and play when I'm happy cos makes me happier, and I like to think it does the same for those around me.

I wished to play violin at school, but it was extra curriculum and we could not afford the lessons.
All the Irish I have met were joyful and smiling, always happy to dance and sing.
It is grand that you play piano and accordion. Listening to music brings rest to the soul.

I always love to hear and see the traditional native music and dance associated with the different countries. It's interesting to see how the different cultures vary. The different languages, dialects and accents interest me too.
I often ponder on the question if I'd been born in another part of the world would I be a different person to what I am now? Would our paths still be the same?

I have a little angel, she plays a violin,
all the creatures gather round, they’re welcome to join in.
The notes wing up to Heaven, on into outer space
to all the stars and planets, spread harmony and grace.

Some quotes famous people have made about the violin :

A table, a chair, a bowl of fruit and a violin - what else does a man need to be happy ?
    - Albert Einstein -

Happiness is a thing to be practiced, like the violin.
    - John Lubbock –

A poet is a man who puts up a ladder to a star and climbs it while playing a violin.
    - Edmond de Goncourt –

There is no top. There are always further heights to reach.
    - Jascha Heifetz -

Of course the Violin is also known as the Fiddle - that's what we call it in Ireland anyway, and the person who plays it is
    the Fiddler.

Here's the words to a lovely song by The Wolfetones

    It's called FIDDLER'S GREEN

As I roved by the dockside one evening so fair
To view the salt waters and take in the salt air
I heard an old fisherman singing a song
Oh, take me away boys me time is not long

    Chorus
Wrap me up in me oilskin and blankets
No more on the docks I'll be seen
Just tell me old shipmates, I'm taking a trip mates
And I'll see you someday on Fiddlers Green

Now Fiddler's Green is a place I've heard tell
Where the fishermen go if they don't go to hell
Where the weather is fair and the dolphins do play
And the cold coast of Greenland is far, far away

Now when you're in dock and the long trip is through
There's pubs and there's clubs and there's lassies there too
And the girls are all pretty and the beer is all free
And there's bottles of rum growing on every tree.

Where the skies are all clear and there's never a gail
And the fish jump on board with one swish on their tail
Where you lie at your leisure, there's no work to do
And the skipper's below making tea for the crew

Now I don't want a harp nor a halo, not me
Just give me a breeze and a good rolling sea
I'll play me old squeeze-box as we sail along
With the wind in the riggin to sing me a song

Wrap me up in me oilskin and blankets
No more on the docks I'll be seen
Just tell me old shipmates, I'm taking a trip mates
And I'll see you someday on Fiddlers Green

Listen to the violin playing its haunting music, the notes wrap themselves around you,
penetrate to your very soul and transport you to another world in another time.
Memories awaken and scenes from the past are conjured up, sweet tenderness and
bitter regret mingling together, happiness blending with the sadness of loss...

Fantastic! How did that audience manage to remain in their seats though? That's DANCING music. Hava Nagila - usually starts the dancing off at Jewish weddings, doesn't it - and once they've got started there's no stopping them! I love it. 'Zorba' is another one that no-one can stay still for long - well not me anyway. I actually did myself an injury dancing to this in Cyprus - something gave way in my hip area, I actually felt this tearing/ripping - but even that couldn't stop me dancing. In fact, found out later that 'IT WAS MEANT!' .... Was hobbling around the hotel the next morning (painful) and a fellow guest who said she was a physiotherapist offered to treat it - turned out she was a medium and healer(!) (she didn't want this revealed to anyone else there, but she said felt she had to give me a reading as she could see so many lights around me!) She told me that I had 'a gift' and a talent which I had not yet put to use, but that when the time is right it will blossom. I did not fully understand the true nature of what she was telling me - until 6 months later when all was made clear to me.

Strange and haunting is the music of the voilin,
yet the fiddler can cast his spell upon you too,
so that your feet dance with a mind of their own.
    Sadness, happiness, loss, despair,
the violin speaks all these languages,
the notes replacing words, harsh and soft,
    sorrowful and lighthearted.
There is no mystery in the world
which is a secret to the violin.
