What is your body telling you?

“There are times when we may fool ourselves. There are times when we can fool others. But we can never fool our body. It is the most sensitive barometer of our inner world.”

    -- Sherrill Sellman

“Instead of frittering away your vibrancy with worry or distraction, realize your mind and body are inextricably united. What calms and tones up one, soothes and improves the other.”

    -- Marsha Sinetar

"When you are saying that you are happy and you are not, there will be a disturbance in your breathing. Your breathing cannot be natural. It is impossible."

    -- Osho

"Your body is the ground and metaphor of your life, the expression of your existence. It is your Bible, your encyclopedia, your life story. Everything that happens to you is stored and reflected in your body. In the marriage of flesh and spirit divorce is impossible."

    -- Gabrielle Roth

"If you don't take care of your body, where will you live?"

Even so, it's still worthwhile repeating to ourselves from the moment we awake in the morning that we are happy and that it will be a good day. Our breathing may be affected at times but that will eventually level out when we begin to really believe that we are indeed happy and the world is beautiful. Positive thoughts beget wellbeing.  very happy

What about-"To thine own self be true"? What does that statement actually mean? Does it just mean that you should follow your own conscience in all that you do, or does it also mean that you should not pretend all is rosy when you know it is not? Should you live a lie? I don't think any good can come of doing that. I think we need to face our difficulties head on and deal with them as best we can. Only after we acknowledge them can we benefit from concentrating more fully on the good things in our lives. It's the old pendulum adage again. It can swing wildly but in equilibrium is the best place to be.

It is true to my own self to strive to overcome difficulties without succumbing to negativity. I tell myself it is easier to fight adversity if I think positive thoughts and fill myself with energy. I know all is not rosy, that's the way of the world, but I also know that there is something every one of us can do to help in most situations, whether for ourselves or others. Concentrating on acknowledging that we have to confront darkness and allowing it to overcome us will not make it go away, whereas projecting love and light will dissipate the shadows so that we can at least see where we need to 'strike'.
Even the smallest action to improve things will set in motion the ripple effect, so we should never hold back through thinking that the little we can do is worthless - it never is.
Have you heard the poker advert : In poker it's not the cards you're dealt that are important, it's how you use them.

Yes, sammi, I understand what you are saying but I suspect you need to be of a basically optimistic frame of mind to implement these thoughts. We are, to some extent ,influenced by our genes in this respect and so it follows that the attitude anyone has to adversity is partly formed by hereditary factors--which means that it will be easier for some than for others. As you know, I'm a doubting Thomas so I'm not totally convinced about the premise that optimistic thought necessarily brings about happy outcomes. There is a leap of faith there and I am always reluctant to take such a jump.Is there proof that B follows A in such a philosophy? If there is, I'm not aware of it.

Feather, most people complain that I always imagine the worst scenario and see the darkest side of any situation. But I think this is precisely what makes me stronger, it fires up my defences, I tell myself: "Right, this is what could happen so be careful and take steps to ensure as much as possible that it won't". If I didn't motivate my positivity I'd just plunge into a negative pond and sink to the bottom in the mire. I prefer to be happily surprised when things go well than deeply disappointed when they don't, so what may seem like a negative attitude at first turns out to be the opposite.
If you put positivity into practice you end up at least feeling much brighter and I believe it can change the outcome; it works for me. Try it.
