The Forum Café

Post by Candlelight.kk on Fri 25 Aug 2017, 17:27

All prophpbb-hosted forums have now fallen victim to the clutches of the tapatalk takeover crowd, the outfit that took over all the FreeForums-hosted sites.
Forumland was a forum hosted by prophpbb.
OK, it hadn't really taken off the ground yet, and we knew it was going to happen some time soon, and so had time to salvage some priority postings in time - (see my related post in the Spiritlove thread in the Members Only section 'THE TWILIGHT ZONE').

I have today posted this message over on Forumland (where our Misty and Curious are also registered members):

I don't understand what tapatalk expects from the changes they've imposed.  Have they increased advertising revenues somehow or are there other benefits for them, one wonders?  I wasn't aware of that website's existence but I wonder if websites are largely out of fashion anyway, their day mostly over?

I hadn't heard of them either until a member joined here on LAL, using tapatalk - just before all this takeover nonsense happened with FreeForums.  Can't remember that member's name now - or where the post was/is here *, but they only ever posted that one time.  We never heard any more from them. Some of us had replied in the thread, welcoming them to the forum and each saying that we'd never heard of it either.

Seems now it's a huge conglomerate that's been in operation for many years - dealing [mainly] in mobile phone communications - though they appear to have a lot of fingers/fists in lots of different pies:

From Wiki:
Tapatalk is an application to allow access to Internet forums on mobile devices,[1] developed by Tapatalk, Inc.

Tapatalk is primarily designed to provide improved forum access for mobile platforms over access provided by the forum software itself. The application was originally designed for Android[citation needed] but now also supports iOS and Windows Phone. Tapatalk allows the user to have a unified interface to access multiple forums at the same time.

Forum software systems supported by Tapatalk are: phpBB3, vBulletin, xenForo, IPBoard, Simple Machines Forum, MyBB, bbPress, Kunena, Vanilla, ASP Playground, and Drupal. In addition, 'Conversr' (the integrated forum of Composr CMS) allows for Tapatalk support[2] via the installation of an official addon.

Thing is, both FFs and prophpbb forum hosts already had a perfectly satisfactory built-in program for accessing all their forums from mobile phones!  It worked fabulously without any problems/complaints from anyone before this enforced takeover.
Loads of people access their forums & blogs etc from their phones - but also loads of people don't - nor have they any desire in doing so.  Tapatalk are not interested in the desktop side of things at all.  Moreover, they claim to "provide improved forum access for mobile platforms" ---  BS!  There is widespread evidence all over the place showing that since their involvement, previous perfectly-working systems have now deteriorated drastically - and continue to do so.  The complaints and frustrations continue and they have created ruin and heartache for many long-term-running forums, small or large.
They do seem intent on grabbing more and more in an attempt at expanding their market niche, and yes, they appear to get a lot of their income from sponsoring adverts, etc.

wagtail
As I posted in that link above, with reference to LAL and the reason for moving to a different host - my msg to tapatalk:

Business is business.....They'll either succeed or they won't.  I don't suppose anyone in that business will care about website/forum users' preferences unless the users walk away.  They might not care even then if they've already found alternative users.

My guess is the latter.  Makes no difference either way, because the damage has already been done - and not fixable.  You've only got to take a look at what is supposed to be the 'Support' site for all their controlled forums ... to see how things are panning out.  This is just one current thread amongst a HUGE list of long thread complaints and comments from admins and members of taken-over forums: (As I type this, more comments are being made to this thread, which was only started a few hours ago):  https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/tapatalksupport/forums-not-loading-t37262.html

And here is just the first page of many, many more complaints of varying reasons on that 'Support' forum - all current and posted today:
https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/tapatalksupport/search.php?search_id=newposts&unlimit=1&discussions=1

It's depressing (to put it mildly).

I'd feel sorry for anyone who's invested much time and effort in a website but I wonder how much the old material matters.  I used to think it was important but do many folk really access old threads and discussions?

I would think it depends on how interesting those old threads and discussions are, and how interested you are in the subject matter.  You might come new to a forum, even just as a lurker, and have questions in your mind about certain subjects, may be a subject you are just learning about, and find that many people have already input their views and knowledge, and can learn loads from what is already there.  Or you can be there as a poster whether new or not with a question, and someone can point you to a thread where its already been discussed.

Just some of the reasons why its important to at least have the option to access all the history of any website.

There's no knowing, unless the owner can see from her website's statistics tools, how much interest is being shown in old threads.

And unless lurkers become posters we ordinary members won't ever know if old threads have any interest for them.  My experience is that few lurkers become active contributors based on what I observe on several other websites where I've been a regular for many years.  Indeed only a few new members ever become regular contributors.

I don't disagree that it's better to have those old threads, though, and I sometimes re-visit a particularly interesting or important one but I do wonder how many members do the same.

It would be interesting  to hear from members who aren't contributors but lurk and read but - by definition - it ain't likely to happen.  Wink

Forumland has now been amalgamated into the Forum Café, which can be found here : https://forumcafe.forumotion.co.uk/

Still some bits & pieces to tidy up, but once all that gets sorted the old Forumland can be ditched without regret.

This subject no longer belongs in the "Grumpy" thread, so I will transfer the relevant posts into a new thread of its own, under the heading of The Forum Café.
