Kirlian Photography ~ Do they take your aura? or your money?

(originally posted on 29 Feb 2008)

In some “psychic fairs” in the United States, supposed photos of the human aura can be obtained. In this case the photographers use an intricate procedure that requires first snapping a photo of the subject whose hand is on a sensor plate, something that is done by inducing an electrical current to the hand of the customer. They then take a measurement of the intensity of the current, which is then computer translated to a liquid crystal electronic display screen, enabled to produce colors, located inside the camera. The colors, arbitrarily selected, are then projected to the contour of the body of the subject, in accordance to their acupunctural distribution, and the copy is then printed. An investigation made by Joe Nickell, the expert in fraud detection, showed that the same individual will obtain two very different auras, made just minutes apart with the same camera.

Does that mean they are faked, Candlelight?

Well certainly looks that way from that report, doesn't it. It's not saying that ALL are so, but last year at Mind, Body & Spirit Festival I paid £25 to have my aura photograph taken in one of those chairs that they have described. My friend paid the same, and then a reading was given to each of us from the photo taken. We had to wait in a long queue for this.
At that same Festival there was an area where you could have a "reading"done choosing between about 10 or 12 different readers, giving Tarot Reading, Astrology, and various others. I chose what was purported to be a "Medium" giving a reading. (all charging a similar amount of money). It was around about the same time that I had had 3 readings done from 3 different reputable Spiritualist mediums and all had given me the exact same information.
The "reading" I got at the Festival was quite frankly a load of ********, and this fella was no more a medium than my cat. He came out with such a load of babble (no contact from anyone in the spirit world - apart to say "there's someone in spirit who looks like you" ) - wasn't even cold reading. My overall impression was that he was trying to push the sale of some TENS machine that he had a (financial) interest in, gave me his card after recommending that I needed to boost my energy levels and these machines would help (as well as eating a Mars bar!!) Honestly, it was an insult to my intelligence (and to my purse). These festivals seem to be a licence for any crank or fraud to sell their wares and take money from unsuspecting members of the public. I was prepared and indeed in a position to be discerning regarding that reading - but regarding the Kirlian photography I had no reason to suspect this may be a money-making venture (until I read this article). I do think people should be very wary of the vast exploitation which exists surrounding this type of event. There's a huge money-making industry that exists in this area - one of the things that the changes to the Fraudulent Mediums Act will be addressing.

Thanks for that. Mine was part of The Science Festival which is held in Orkney every year.

I nearly had my aura photo done at Mind Body spirit, but thought it was a bit pricey at the time. I'm glad I didn't now.

It's like that Kodak advert with the three cute elves who take the colour and will only give it back against a ransom.
