The Battle of the Psychics Empty The Battle of the Psychics

Large numbers of Russians are consulting mystics and psychics - up to a fifth of the population has done so at least once, according to one polling organisation. And there are signs that this tendency is increasing amid economic crisis and conflict in Ukraine.

Psychotherapist Dmitry Olshansky links the growing popularity of psychics to Russia's economic crisis - since last December the value of the rouble has halved.

"People feel unsure. And they want to rely on somebody. They need a 'parent' figure, a shoulder, or somebody who would tell them how to live and what to do," he says.

"Moreover, Russians don't have reliable sources of information. What people see on television, what they read in newspapers does not correspond to reality. And they know this."

This, he suggests, increases their need for someone who appears to have special powers to discern the truth.

'The Battle of the Psychics' is a reality TV show that attracts more than four million viewers per episode in Russia, even now into its 16th series.

Alexander Sheps, one of the winners of Battle of the Psychics, says it seems that there is a particular demand for his services among the urban middle class.

"There are bankers, there are very famous politicians, a lot of famous people. My clients include two Orthodox priests. Despite praying in the church and having a congregation, they come to me to solve their problems," he says.

I just watched it.  Its like Russia's equivalent of Australia's Psychic Challenge (The One, I think it was called).  Seems to have taken over the whole country.

Enjoyed the video Candlelight.  Thanks.  thanks

I hadn't heard of the ones mentioned here, I will research them though. Through personal experience there are very "good" psychics, which has convinced me without a doubt, of their sincerity.

Hi Misty, The one I remember most, was not well known, but he was like a mind reader, he told me things that had happened or were going to happen and it was 100% accurate, I could say any persons name, he would describe them to a T. The first time I met him he told me what my question was and answered it. There was another, an elderly Scottish woman, I saw many years ago, everything she told me then has since happened, though at the time it didn't seem likely.

A lot of the things that are 'predicted' by psychics can really be so general that they are likely to be accepted by any number of other people (the Barnum Effect) - especially things that are predicted to happen in the future, where people will often try to make a situation fit, sometimes many years after the event . A lot of the professional 'psychics' also use cold reading as a matter of course. They are really just using a form of 'mind-reading', observing reactions, eye and hand movements etc, and asking lots of questions to gain certain information without making it obvious that that is what they are doing.

The ones I mentioned were exceptional, especially the guy I talked about first, when my friend and I use to go to him together, he would read us both at the same time, the first time we went as soon as we got there he told us what we wanted to know without us saying a word, in fact neither of us wanted to see him alone, as he seemed creepy to us, as he was so accurate, and he wasn't in it for the money, it was so little, in fact he told us to drop by anytime for free readings. As for the Scottish lady, I forgot what she told me as time went by, but I came across the tape I had of our reading and could see that all she told me had come to pass. I realize that there are charlatans out there, but I feel I was fortunate in finding the ones I saw. [Only admins are allowed to see this image]
